Subjective Structures
Forms that appear in between the object and the observer
The series is the result of my continuous studies of the limits of human perception, inspired by Kantian models of experience and the notion of “the thing in itself” as it differs from “mere appearances”. With these works I want to create “hyper-subjective” objects, ones that create an intimate space of observation between the object and its observer, prompting an acknowledgement of mere appearances and a consideration of what might be unseen.
Subjective Structures, created during a residency at HoloCenter New York, is a series of abstract optical sculptures that feature ambiguous geometric forms reduces to two orthogonal planes and coated in dichroic material. Seen from different vantage points, the sculptures present strikingly different tonal and formal properties, appearing as different shapes of different colors.
